There is anxiety among parents and teachers about the future of their children, since the education in the north-east is adversely affected by the prevailing situation. As far as the east is concerned, the students are unable to pursue their studies due to the existing situation. More than 150,000 people are displaced following the war situation in Batticaloa.

The displaced people live in camps as refugees. Their children, who live in camps, are unable to continue their studies.

It is estimated that the education of about 17, 000 students has been affected due to displacement. Although alternate arrangements have been made for their studies, it is reported that about 6,700 students do not attend schools.

Following the exodus of the people through fear, 103 schools in the Batticaloa district have been closed for several months. Since some displaced people are accommodated in 9 schools, the educational activities of those schools are also affected. In one way or the other, Tamil medium schools in the east are affected.

On the other hand the students in the north and the Jaffna under-graduates face several problems in continuing their studies. The abduction of 4 students in Jaffna has created a sense of fear among the students. These are some of the challenges faced by the students in the north-east.

It is, therefore, important that the atmosphere that prevails in other parts of the country must be created in the north-east as well. Then only there can be congenial atmosphere for studies.
