Once again petroleum cooperation has increased the fuel price. This is the third increase of the price of fuel during in the last 6 weeks. Aantha De Mel, the Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation has indicated that there can be some more increase to follow in the future.

Economic analysts have already warned that there could be a chain of economic burdens heaped on the people in the near future and that the economy of the country is endangered.

Following the rise in the fuel price, transport fares, the prices of gas and other essential commodities have already risen. There are indications that the electricity tariffs can also go up.

On the other hand there is a fall in the investments. Share market has dropped. Foreign currency has been devalued. As a result, the cost of living is going up to reach dizzy heights.

What is the cause for the ruin of this country? The military approach and the politics of President Rajapakse is the main cause for the serious repercussion on the economy of the country. It is obvious that the government doesn’t have a policy of peaceful approach to the ethnic problem. They are not prepared to approach the problem with compromise, with the commitment for co existence.

Instead, the government has a military agenda to work on. Consequent to such policies, the economy of the country is diverted to war expenditure.

Will the government realize the seriousness of the reality and make amends by a commitment to peaceful negotiations?
