Bandula Gunawardena, the Minster of Consumer Affairs and Trade, states that the government is unable to control the price hike since the price rise in the world market has exceeded beyond 100%.
He states that the government is unable to contain any increase in price hike and the cost of living and that no force can ever bring them under control. He explains that this problem cannot be tackled merely from a political background. Earlier, as UNP spokesman for economic affairs, he made serious criticisms about government’s economic policies and about the bungling of the financial management of the country almost daily. It was while he was conducting a strong campaign against the economic policies of the government that President Rajapakse successfully persuaded him to join the government. He was offered the portfolio the relevant ministry which he himself strongly criticized and has now made him to praise the same ministry that he condemned .The tongue that condemned the government’s economic policy is silenced and in fact, is heaping encomiums. On the eve of the New Year, Minister Bandula Gunawardene summoned the traders in Colombo and held several rounds of talks and tried hard to bring the prices of commodities under control but he had been unsuccessful. Having tried hard in many ways to do this and having failed on each occasion, now, he has publicly confessed the inability to bring the cost of living under control. The Minster of Consumer Affairs and Trade has conceded that the government is unable to control the price hike. The same minister while in the opposition criticised the governments economic policies and management of the country. What does this prove! Is he not double tongued; the moment he was made a minister and given the privilages and benefits, his criticisms have died and praises heaped on the same ministry he once condemned. Is this the greed of the minister or is this is one of Rajapakse's silencing trick. |
