Human rights situation in Sri Lanka has been internationalized. Earlier, human rights violations were discussed by Human Rights Organizations within the country. Now, it has gone beyond the shores of this country. It is being discussed with great concern by Human Rights Organizations and activists all over the world.
The human rights issue is being discussed at the UNO. It is being discussed by the donor countries. Yet, there are no signs that they can be contained. There are no signs that the situation has improved. Now, the question is what strategies that the international community can employ in resolving this serious issue.
Following the derailment of the CFA and the increase in military operation in the country, the human rights violations are on the increase. Even, the aid workers who server the victims of military operation on humanitarian grounds have been killed. Members of Tamils Rehabilitation Organizations were killed. The employees of the ICRC were killed last month.
But, there have not been any proper investigation into these human rights violations. The culprits have not been brought to book. It is reported that there are political influences exerted in the conduct of the investigation. Although there have been several incidents of human rights violations unleashed on the Tamils for several decades, nobody has ever been punished. The allegations, that every successive government has safeguarded the perpetrators of violence, cannot be dismissed lightly.
There are allegations by the International Commission of Jurists that there is a possibility of evidence being tempered with in respect of Muthur massacre. ICJ has demanded that the investigations must be started afresh.
In such a context, what are the strategies of the international community to deal with the situation of human rights violations in the country?
