It is appropriate to dwell on the views expressed by Ranil Wickremasinghe, the leader of the opposition, regarding Tamil, Sinhala news papers, recently at a ceremony in Colombo.
He charged that the Sinhala News papers are attempting to cause a division in the country instead of ensuring unity among the people. He also stated that the Tamil newspapers also work on the same lines. Ranil Wickremasinghe stated that the Sinhala news papers disseminate news to the Sinhala people in a manner totally different from the way the Tamil newspapers do it. As a result, there ca be division in the country. He further stated that when a journalist is arrested or murdered and if he happens to be a Tamil, we don’t speak about it. On contrary, he is branded as supporter of the LTTE or as a member of that organization. But, the international community views him as a journalist. Whether they like it or not the media keep a distance and fail to highlight the truth. It is a wonder that Ranil has failed to express views about the manner in which the English news papers disseminate news. Or is it that he has avoided expressing his views about the English media. We all know that the politics of this country is greatly responsible for the present ethnic crisis and for the sorry plight of this country. It must be said that the media has also been equally responsible for this sad state of affairs. The political culture of the relevant period also influences the changing trends of the media. It is obvious that a majority of the people of this country craves for peace but majority of the media in the south gives importance to the views of a selected few, who crave for war. The media is an instrument today to create dissention and disputes, although they have the capability to create peace good will and co-existence. A Peace Confidence Index survey carried out showed more than 90 % of the Tamils support peace while more than 50 % of Singhalese support war ââ?¬â?? the country is divided along ethnic lines. The atrocities committed by the SLA, the Police and the government supported militia men has earned bitterness, hatred, and distrust of the Tamil people which has led to the Tamils having no trust on the government who had also through their propagandas and actions made the Singhalese and the Tamils filled with hatred towards one another. The root causes are discrimination and denial of rights of the Tamils by the successive Singhalese governments. The people who are affected are the minority Tamils. The only way to achieve peace is to revive the CFA and through it, a credible devolution package for the people in the North and East and let them decide their destiny for themselves. Any thing short of this is doomed to fail. |
