The pressure from the international community against the government for its military approach is intensifying. It will intensify further in the coming weeks and months. But the Sri Lankan government doesn’t seem to be aware or concerned over the impending trends.

It is said that the American Senate is considering suspending all military assistance in view of the military approach of the Sri Lankan government. It is reported that a resolution is to be tabled at the sessions of the American Senate in regard to military support to Sri Lanka in 2008.

This indicates that the human rights violations and the abuse of powers by the security forces of the Colombo Administration are responsible for this change of attitude of the international community towards Sri Lankan government.

It is also learnt that UN official John Holmes, who sis expected to visit Sri Lanka this week is expected to go into these issues. Louise Arbour, Un Human Rights Commissioner, is to visit Sri Lanka in October. Manfred Novak, a special coordinator for torture, is expected to visit in November. Walter Kalin, a special UN envoy for internally displaced people will also be visiting the country in December. All these persons are to make official visits to Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile a resolution by the EU calling for stern action against Sri Lanka for human rights violations is to come up once again before the UN Rights Commission.

International community has realized that the government is interested in racism and in a military approach instead of negotiations for a political solution.

It is a shame that the international community took so long to get to the truth of Sri Lankan governments agenda of ethnic cleansing of the Tamils in the North and East. An ordinary man on the street will be able to assess the situation in one look at the devastation that has taken place. Even now the government is not bothered of what the IC thinks because it believes that whatever the situation, the IC, especially the US, China and India will continue to provide military hardware and other forms of aid as these countries have to dump their unwanted weapons.
The Senchcholai massacre killing 61 girls two staff members and injuring 129 girls done by repeated rounds of bombing by the k-fir jets carried out by the Sri Lankan Air Force is one good example of the well planned act of ethnic cleansing. In spite of the screaming and desperate calls of the girls for help, the Air Force turned a deaf ear and repeatedly bombed the school and its surrounding areas hampering the rescue efforts. The result - Many died on the spot, many were wounded, most had multiple injuries, some lost there their limbs some had severe burns. The worst thing in this incident is the behaviour of the government. The leadership nor the armed forces never showed a bit of remorse but instead proclaimed as `precise and well targetedââ?¬â?¢. srAirforc which is one of many incidents of ââ?¬Å?Shameââ?¬â?¢ for Sri Lanka.
To say it has taken such a long time for the International community to realize the Sri Lankan government is only interested in racism and military approach instead of negotiations for a political solution is indeed a poor reflection of the leaders of the International community.
