According to the statistics 54,000,00. people in Asia are affected by this disease. 340,000 have died in this region due to this disease. It is interesting to note that AIDS has affected less than 0.1% percent of Sri Lanka’s population. So far only 200 persons have died due to the disease.
Health Minister Nimal Sri Pala de Silva addressing the conference stated that the secret of success in Sri Lanka is that all successive governments have invested on social security measures such as health and free education.
He added that the Sri Lankan people supported by the strong cultural and religious influence have been empowered health behavior to counter the spread of AIDS.
It is necessary to get the support and cooperation of all sections of the society in preventing and controlling AIDS.
We stress that if the countries in the Asian Pacific region worked to gether to alleviate poverty and raise the economy, then diseases such as AIDS cannot be a challenge.
