The communists in India have strongly protested against the Indo –US nuclear deal. This deal has precipitated a political crisis in India. The communists in India fear that the Indo-US nuclear agreement can pave the way for America to exert pressure and its influence on the foreign policy of India.
The Communists point out that India even before signing the agreement voted against Iran with America. Communists accuse Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his government of following a foreign policy favourable to America.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stated that Indo-Us nuclear is an honourable deal and that the cabinet has approved it. Dr.Manmohan Singh defended the deal, attacked its critics and dared the Left to withdraw its support.
The communists want Dr.Manmohan Singh to delay the deal for US ratification after getting it approved by the 45 nation nuclear supplier groups and by the international atomic energy agencies. Neither the government of Manmohan Singh nor the communists are prepared to reconcile over this issue.
The support of the 59 members of the Parliament representing the left parties led by the Communist Party of India (Marxisits) is vital for the survival of the UPA which lacks its own majority in the Lower House of Parliament.
This is the first time in the political history of India that an international agreement has triggered off such a serious controversy. Who will come forward a compromise, the Congress Party or the Communist party?
