The criticism made by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike against President Rajapajse is like the pot calling the kettle black. “Government is a government, terrorists are terrorists, a government cannot conduct its affairs like a terrorist. When a government fights terrorism it should act with clear vision and definite strategies. It cannot act like terrorists”.

This is what President Kumaratunga has stated expressing her concern over the present trend of human rights violations such as murders, abductions and disappearances prevailing in the country.

It is true that the present government is engaged in acts that are against the interests of the Tamil people. It is also true that the present government is accountable for the human rights violations committed under the pretext of fighting terrorism.

Therefore the question of the responsibility of the government over these acts of violence is unquestionable. Bu the question is whether President Chandrika has a right to criticize such conduct on the part of this government.

It cannot be forgotten that President Chadrika has been one of those rulers of this country, who had been responsible for lots of atrocities unleashed on the Tamil people. She seems to paint a rosy picture about human rights violations during her regime.

She seems to have forgotten that during her regime in the late 1995 and early 1996, when the army recaptured the peninsula, more than 100 or around the Tamils were arrested and that nothing has been heard about them until now.

President Chandrika came to power by condemning the killings of Sihalese students in Suryakantha. But during her regime several dozens of human bodies were recovered in Chemmani grave and in other places. But the culprits have not been brought to book yet. There had been abductions and disappearances during her regime. State terrorism was unleashed on the Tamil people during her regime.

She now talks as though people had forgotten all those misdeeds of hers!.

Immediately after the recapture of the Jaffna peninsula by the army during her regime was to destroy the symmetry where the bodies of several LTTE carders were buried. Her government pay a respect for the dead.

Let her criticize the human rights violations of the present government after responding to charges against her for human rights violations during her regime particularly in the years of the 1995 and 1996. It is strange that she makes criticism like a pigeon of peace.
