President is in a dilemma between the South and the international community. There are reports from the government sources themselves that the opposition parties are getting ready to topple the government during the vote on the budget at the end of this year.
But the government is hopeful that the JVP will not extend its support to Mangala Samarawera and the UNP Alliance on this issue.
On the contrary JVP has revealed its stand. JVP has stated that if the government takes measures to put forward a federal solution or any solution on the lines of federalism then the government will face a precarious situation during the budget debate. This has been stated by none other than the JVP Propaganda Secretary and Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa.
It is clear that Rajapkse government faces a political check-mate. President is scheduled to visit the New York based UN General Assembly next month. The international community has made serious allegations regarding human rights violations in the country. He has to face the international community directly during the UN sessions.
In such a context he has to put forward a reasonable and fair solution to the ethnic issue in order to cope with the international pressure. The international community is frustrated with the government’s
lack of commitment for a political settlement and with its military operations geared towards a military approach.
There is a an opinion emerging from the international community that it should in unison and jointly design political strategies to pressurize Sri Lanka to move along the lines of political approach rather than a military approach.
Therefore President is compelled to take a meaningful package to the international community. President is scheduled to visit India next November for the 6th time after he became an executive President There again he has to take a meaningful political package since he has already made promises to India on those lines during his earlier visits.
On the one hand, he faces JVP threat and on the other hand, he is confronted with the need to present a political package for the national ethnic issue during his visit to the UN and India. That is the dilemma.
President Rajaokse is between the JVP and the international community.
