Tamil Parliamentarians Mano Ganeshan and Suresh Premachandren met Chandrika Kumaratunga and represented problems faced by the people regarding human rights violations.
This meeting took place at a time, when there is speculation that President Chandrika will re- enter politics after her return to the island.
When leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe and the SLFP-M convenor Mangala Samaraweera signed a memorandum of under standing, she sent her blessings from London.
The media has given much prominence to the views expressed by former President Chandrika about human rights violations at her meeting with the Tamil Parliamentarians.
Expressing concern over the recent trends of human rights violation in the country, she categorically stated that a government cannot act like a terrorist. She stressed that the government fighting terrorism must act with caution and vision.
She has given an undertaking that she would raise the issues of the human rights violations in the country at the appropriate international forum.
Every successive government in the country during the last 25 years is responsible for human rights violations of this country. The hands of the leaders of those governments are blood strained.
If we look at the recent past, Chandrika Kumaratunga had also been responsible for human rights violations during her 11 year rule in Sri Lanka.
It is not necessary here to state that 1000’s of innocent civilians were killed during the war for peace that she conducted. In fact when she was offered a consultant post for the South Asian region at the UNESCO, human rights organizations pointed out the human rights violations under her regime.
