The increase in the cost of living of the people has affected all sections of the society. It has affected the estate workers most. The estate workers who obtain merger wages are unable to cope up with the increase in the cost of living.
It has been a complaint by the estate population that they don’t get any wage increase through any budget proposals. They have to stage demonstrations and struggles to get a wage increase. Even after such struggles the wage increase, they get is quite minimal.
The Minister of Labour Athaduwa Seneviratne has requested the Employers ‘Federation to increase the daily wage of the estate workers from Rs170 to Rs.200, despite the agreement that exists between the trade unions and the Employers’ Federation.
Labour Minister Senervirtne made this request to the Employers’ Federation sequel to a directive by President Rajapkse. The Employers’ Federation has consented to consider the proposal for the wage increase.
While the basics salary of workers is not less than rupees 5000 in all sectors, no such wage has been fixed in regard to the estate workers.
It is regrettable that the wages of the estate workers who work hard to earn the foreign exchange of the country are not paid wages to cope with the increasing cost of living.
