John Holems, Under Secretary for humanitarian affairs stated that Sri Lanka is a precarious country for the aid workers and his statement triggered off a serious controversy in the country. The controversy was so intense that he was branded as a terrorist.
But the two incidents that took place during the last week only confirm how truthful his statement is. Following the killing of an aid worker, a humanitarian organization based in Denmark suspended its operation in Jaffna. According to them 4 of its aid workers have been killed and two have been abducted and caused to disappear.
Likewise another humanitarian organization has suspended its operation following the killing of 17 aid workers in Moothoor. Although one year has passed since the committing of the murder, nobody has been brought to book.
The report that 44 aid workers have been killed during the last two years has been a shocking news to all human rights activists. A human rights organization based in France has already published details about the 44 persons who have disappeared.
In such a development, where the human rights organizations are suspending their work in war torn areas, can the government ever say that Sri Lanka is safe for aid workers?. It is meaningless to make such assertions without conducting proper investigations, identifying the offenders and bringing them to trial.
