In 2003 a quarrel between two youths over a cap they were wearing led to clashes between two groups and ended up n the deaths of 27 persons. As a continuation of this murder a small girl was killed two weeks ago in a village in Kalutara district. Last Sunday 5 persons were killed following clashes between the underworld gangs.
The gun culture in the country has been going on for quite a long time. The killings of human beings have become a normal event. The human lives have no value. There is no respect for human lives. The civil war has been continuing for a quarter of a century. The war has made the society cruel and sadistic. We are experiencing the consequences of the civil war in the country. People are insensitive over human killings. We notice a trend to take revenge among the people in the society. In a country that has been nurtured by religious values, we find violence dominating the society. Every day we hear of killings. Every day we see killings. In a country where the Buddhism preaches non violence to even all being, how can human killings be justified. It is unfortunate that no force can bring the trend of violence to an end. While there is a voice against clashes among groups and violence in the south, how can the south cry for waging or continuing a war. There is duplicity. We wonder whether a day sans violence will ever dawn!. An English translation of the Editorial in Thinakkural, Tamil daily, based in Colombo Set as favorite Bookmark Comments (1)

The gun culture in the country has all along been the hall mark of the Sri Lankan governments. Peace, harmony, development and welfare of the people had never been in their agendas. Where in the sixty years of gaining independence, had Sri Lanka practiced a just and fair system among the people in the country. It is always intimidation and violence, denial of rights and hoodwinking propagandas. The killings of human beings have become a normal event. All we know and hear in Sri Lanka is violence, kidnappings, abductions, intimidation, killings, rape and in almost all cases the government has a hand and its armed forces are committing such acts. When the international committee and the aid donors raise concerns, the government will say they have initiated a Presidential Commission of Inquiry to look into the violations but nothing good comes out of it. The Sri Lankan minister of Foreign Affairs Bogollagama attending the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Malaysias Independence would be shocked to find how people of many races are able to live in harmony and have achieved progress in their lives. Among the people celebrating the cause are also the Sri Lankan Tamils and Singhalese who have made great strides contributing to the development of Malaysia and enhancing their personal lives, something the Sri Lankan government deprived the Tamils living in Sri Lanka. |
