The international community shows great concern over the situation in Sri Lanka in recent times. The war and the continuing human rights violations have caused great concern among the international community.
Britain has drawn up plans to resolve the Sri Lankan ethnic crisis. The strategies of Britain are drawn up by the Defence Ministry, Department for International Development and the Ministry of Foreign and Commonwealth Relations.
This program envisages 4 issues such as more dedication to peace through negotiations, Promoting the security of the civil societies by ensuring the human rights, Restructuring the defence for permanent peace and strengthening the civil societies for effective peace structure.
As usual the extremist parties have voiced their opposition to these proposals. The JVP has condemned it as a move by the Britain to divide Sri Lanka. JVP further requested the government not to allow foreign interference in the internal affairs of the country.
JVP has further warned that if the government doesn’t stop that interference, they were going to muster the support of the people and stage a struggle against the government. Dr. Rajeeva Wijesinghe, the Director, of Sri Lankan Peace Secretariat has also criticized Britain.
This is not the first time that such criticisms have emerged from extremist forces.
Prior to the British rule, the Sinhalese and the Tamils had their own kingdoms and it was Britain that annexed both for administrative convenience but when they gave independence, they left the power in the hands of the majority Sinhala people. That has been the cause of the present national problem in the country.
Therefore, Britain has a moral responsibility to contribute to the resolution of this problem.
