There is a funny political climate prevailing in Sri Lanka. Neither the government nor the opposition is strong. The government is blindly following a policy of military operations in the northeast, while there are worsening human rights violations in the entire country.
Meanwhile, the cost of living is increasing in such a manner that the ordinary man is unable to bear it. Every day, he wakes up wondering the price of which commodity will increase.
The Rajapakese government with the mega cabinet is unable to resolve any of the crises that the people are facing. The opposition is so bankrupt that it is unable to make a meaningful contribution for the good of the country.
The UNP and the SLFP-M are staging people’s demonstrations all over the country to protest against the political and the economic crises faced by the people. The JVP also holds demonstrations in the country as a protest against the government. These indicate the frustration of the people.
Both Ranil Wickremasinghe and Mangala Samaraweera held separate meetings with former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and discussed the current political situation. The JVP has subtly indicated that it will not be a party to defeat the government.
In short, there prevails a funny political climate in the country.
