Late Dr.Anton Balasignam in his book “War and Peace”, states that the Sinhala ruling class has been vying for power at the cost of the ethnic issue. The Sinhala political parties have been securing political power and retaining it by harping on the Tamil problem.
He stated that it was this craze for the power by the political parties of the south that has stood in the way of the resolution of the Tamil problem.
It is appropriate to recall these views of Dr.Anton Balasingam at this juncture, when the government is facing a serious crisis of an impeding no confidence motion against it. This Tamil issue will be raised again.
The United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party ( Mahajana Wing) are reportedly striving to propose a vote of no confidence motion on the government with the view to topple it and the Tamil problem will be raised in the Tug- of -war among the political parties of the South.
The government is concerned that the minority parties, particularly the parties of the upcountry Tamils and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, can at any moment let down the government.
At the same time, it is also reported that there is a displeasure among certain staunch supporters of the SLFP and the UNP Parliamentarians who crossed over to the government regarding the conduct of the government.
In order to survive in such a context, the government has to depend on Buddhist Sinhala extremist forces for its survival. It is only then it can brave the vote of no confidence in Parliament. The government has to depend on the JVP and JHU to continue in power. In order to get their support the government has to use the Tamil issue as their political pawn.
Theses twp parties –JVP and JHU-are opposed to any change in the unitary nature of the Sri Lankan state and extensive power devolution. So in order to obtain their support in the event of a no confidence motion, the ruling party will be compelled to tow the lines of the Sinhale Buddhsist extremism.
In that event, another chapter will unfold in the annals of the history of this country in which Lankan Tamil problem will be a political pawn for the parties of the south vying for power.
