Military operations, displacements and refugee camps are the experiences of the people of the north east. People who were affected by military operations in the past have been living in refugee camps or in welfare centers.
Although the government takes steps to resettle the displaced people, there are complaints that proper facilities are not provided to them.
Before the tragedy of the people who have been displaced in the east has been resolved, military operations have begun in the north and east.
Last Saturday the security forces conducted military operations to capture Silavathurai in Mannar. Last Sunday, they were able to capture Silavaturai following violent shell attacks. During the military operations, 6400 people belonging to 160 families have been displaced. They are presently accommodated in Nanatan Divisional secretariat area.
People have disappeared from Musali, Aripu, Silavathurai, Saveriyapuram and Kokupadaiyan areas. Although Mannar secretariat has taken steps to provide them cooked meals for three days, they have not been provided with basic needs.
Meanwhile, Minister for Resettlement Rishad Badiudeen has made orders to provide immediate relief to the displaced people.
People from the north and east have suffered displacement for the last 25 years. There must be an end to their sufferings.
The international community has pointed out that the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka cannot be resolved through military operations. The co chair countries insist on a political solution through negotiations.
Military operations must be stooped and the doors must be opened for negotiations. All sections of the society must come forward to put an end to the present tragedy.
