Amnesty International based in Britain has requested UN Human Rights Council to deal with Lanka in respect of flaws in preserving and protecting human rights. The sixth sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council are to be held in Geneva next Monday. Amnesty International has appealed to all representatives in the UNHC to take the human rights situation in Sri Lanka quite seriously. Amnesty international urges the authorities to ensure the provision of appropriate assistance to the civilians in the northern and eastern provinces.

The following issues pointed out by the AI will be given priority at the forth coming sessions of the UNHRC.

  • Forced child recruitment by paramilitary groups working with government security forces.
  • Unlawful killings, abductions and enforced disappearances of civilians are daily occurrences
  • The displaced refugees live in fear
  • Humanitarian aid workers are unable to function independently due to harassment.
  • Median men are attacked and there are threats.
  • Certain provisions of Emergency Regulations threaten to impose unjustified restrictions on freedom of expression.
  • Many provisions are very vaguely and generally worded and therefore may be interpreted as criminalizing range of activities including media reporting.
  • There is a concern about alleged discriminatory applications with regard to Tamils.
  • There has been a marked absence of effective investigations.
Having dealt several other matters in detail the Amnesty International urges that there should be some provision for an independent international human rights monitoring in Sri Lanka. R.Sampanthan, TNA Parliamentary Group leader, has stressed this matter on the floor of the House.
