While there are only two months for the government to submit the budget proposal in Parliament, it is compelled to collect a large sum of money by levying taxes. That is why the government had to submit 5 new financial bills. It was almost like a mini budget.

If the present politics of the government is pursued, the government will be compelled to present budget not once a year but once every month. The government has exhausted with borrowings from foreign countries and international organizations. It is said that every citizen is burdened with Rs 150,000 debt.

Having borrowed money from foreign countries and foreign organizations, now it is planning to borrow money from foreign commercial banks at a very high interest. This has triggered off a serious controversy in the South.

With globalization and with the development of the electronic technology, the third world countries willy-nilly have to enter into that era. It is inevitable that every individual in the developing countries has to be in possession of or to use a computer or a mobile phone.

There is a move to levy a tax on the monthly charges of the mobile telephones. The people are already burdened with fuel price rise, gas price rise, increasing service charges and rise in bus fares. Now there is going to be taxes on the mobile phone charges. The government says that this tax increase will not affect the ordinary people. But the reality is different.

Minister Sarath Amulnugama has explicitly stated that it has become necessary to levy taxes through financial means due to the war situation in the country. He stated that when there is a heavy expenditure for defence, such economic crises are inevitable.

Therefore it is clear that the present economic plight of this country is due to the government’s commitment to the military solution and military approach to the national ethnic problem.

That is the destiny of the people!.
