The problems and the sufferings faced by the people displaced in Mannar following the war are indescribable. Fearing attacks, they have sought shelter in temples and schools but even there, they feel insecure. Recently even the security of the people who sought refuge in Madu Church could not be ensured.
Meanwhile, Rev..Rayapu Joesef, the Bishop of Mannar, has stated that the plight of the people who have been displaced to areas that are not under the control of the security forces is deplorable. He has appealed to the government to take meaningful steps to solve their problems.
It is learnt that more than 10,000 people have been displaced from Manthai West area following air strikes and shell attacks. They have no place to stay.
Biishop of Mannar, who visited them and spoke to them directly, have given a clear picture. He has also stated that these displaced people need food aid and other essential commodities urgently.
Similarly, the education of the displaced students has also been affected. The displaced students face many challenges, while the students in other parts of the country have regular classes.
The government has a moral duty to resettle the displaced people in their own areas, to provide them relief and to help them to recommence their occupation. This is a humanitarian measure.
