Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday told President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the UNP was ready to assist the Government to solve the country’s grave issues while protecting the party identity and policies.

In response to the President’s letter addressed to UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya inviting the party to form a national government, Mr. Wickremesinghe in a letter to the President said his party was willing to make an honest contribution in a spirit of responsibility to solve the issues facing the country today.

He said this stand was taken earlier as well.

“We are ready to engage in a dialogue with you to achieve those targets working in collaboration with you,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said in the letter.

Meanwhile, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya also acknowledged the President’s letter yesterday saying the matter was referred to the party for necessary action.

“When the country is faced with a grave national crisis, your invitation for support and joining the Government has been referred to the party for necessary action,” the letter said.

The letter also said that modalities of such co-operation would be conveyed to the President by the party leader after consulting the parliamentary group in due course.

“We wish to reiterate that the UNP will act with patriotism and commitment in safeguarding and protecting the nation,” Mr. Jayasuriya said in his letter.
