A vibrant opposition is absent in Sri Lanka today. Sri Lanka has never witnessed such absence of an articulate, strong and vigorous opposition in its political history.

While military onslaughts are intensified in the north–east, there are human rights violations in the whole island. The cost of living is increasing making it unbearable for the people of this country.

But, Rajapakse’s government with a mega government is unconcerned about it. There is no strong opposition that can rally the people and exert pressure on the government to solve these problems.

The UNP, a major opposition is weakened due to internal problems. The Party’s leader, Ranil Wicremasinghe, is interested in retaining his leadership of the party.

By nature he is too mild a politician to rally the forces to organize mass agitations to exert pressure on the government to solve the problems of the people.

Even the JVP who claims to be the Champions of the working class and the downtrodden, is only concerned about it being left out by the Rajapakse government.

Vijitha Herath, a JVP Parliamentarian, has stated his party has to play the role of a strong opposition in the present political context as the UNP is weakened and it is lost for ever.

But, in reality, JVP can never lead a mass agitation in the country. Since it is engrossed in racism, JVP is not going to give up its communal politics, whether it be in the opposition or in the government.

There is an absence of a vibrant opposition that can bring pressure on the government for good governance.
