The ensuing violence in the country has shocked the people of Sri Lanka.
Although
security measures have been intensified in all parts of the country,
violence and anti social activities have not dropped. Ariya Ratna
Silva, the UNP Member of the Dehiwela Municipal Council was shot dead
at the office of the Municipal Council.
At
the same time, there are killings in the north-east. According to
Jaffna Human Rights Commission, 11 were killed and 14 were abducted
within the last 12 days. 59 persons have surrendered to the Jaffna
Human Rights Commission, following threats to life.
It
is essential that the government must put an end to this unhealthy
trend of violence without any delay since Tamil people face many
humanitarian problems.
Dr.Kim
Howells, British State Minister for Foreign and Common wealth Affairs,
had clearly and categorically stated that if the war situation in Sri
Lanka continues, it could destroy democracy and democratic values.
Therefore we reiterate that military offensive must be stopped and steps should be taken to re-commence peace talks.
