The cabinet has approved a proposal by Mrs.Sumatha Jayasena, Minister of Women Affairs, to ban mothers of children under the age of 5 going abroad foe employment.
Another proposal by Minister Jayasenen is that in the case of mothers of children beyond the age of 5, they should give documents guaranteeing that the children would be looked after safely by their nominees.
This proposal has been supported by various groups. This proposal can
be considered a healthy move in view of the fact most of the children
of women who go for employment are neglected.

health are endangered for lack of support and guidance. It is also no

denied of love and affection at their tender age and are subjected to
the influence of several vices. In brief, the mothers being away from

Meanwhile Human Rights Watch based in new York has severely criticized
the proposal and has urged the government to drop the proposal.
They
have pointed out that the proposal violates the provision of the Sri
Lankan constitution and the the husbands of women employed abroad are
irresponsible. international laws.
One does not no how the government intends to approach this issue in
the light of the emerging criticism. We are of the view what is
important is the economic upliftment of the society.
