The international community has requested the UNO to take steps to ensure the right to life of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka following reports of abductions, killings and other such human rights violations and the failure of the government to take appropriate measures to contain them.
The Human Rights Watch based in America, the Amnesty International
based in London and the Asian Human Rights Commission have already
appealed to the UN to interfere directly to improve the ground
situation.
It is also reported that while they are discussing these proposals
among themselves, they have held deliberations with officials of
countries such as Japan and America regarding these issues.
Human Rights activists Bernard Kouchner has been appointed as the
Foreign Minister of France. Earlier when he was appointed to serve on
the panel of experts of the International Commission to inquire into
human rights violations in the country, Dayan Jayathilaka, who was
appointed as Lanka special envoy for international affairs in Geneva,
condemned this appointment.
Later when Richard Boucher, US Deputy State Minister for South Asian
and central Asia, met President, Dayan Jayathillaka spoke about
America’s human rights violations.
These developments have had adverse effects for Sri Lanka at the
international level. These reflect lonely a lack of diplomatic
strategies.
