There have been renewed warnings against all but essential travel to the island of Sri Lanka after the police there found several claymore mines in some of the most popular tourist hot-spots. Sri Lanka police reported finding of a 3Kg claymore mine in the Sinhala-Buddhist heartland and popular tourist resort city of Kandy.
"The mine was placed on the side of the road and could have potentially killed dozens of people," the police officer in charge of the local station said.
Meanwhile, two 15Kg claymore mines were also found in the sea side resort of Kallpitiya, just 5Km north of Colombo.
"Although claymore mines usually target military convoys and VIP vehicles, the chances of them inadvertently striking a civilian vehicle can not be ruled out," said a spokesperson for the Defense Ministry.
"There is also a chance that tourists will get caught up in the violence as it moves closer to Colombo," he added, wanting to remain anonymous due to official protocol.
