The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has launched sustained artillery and multi-barrel rocket fire towards the Thalladi military base in the North Western district of Mannar on Wednesday evening. The rebels have directed the attack since 4:30 pm on Wednesday evening and it has been continuing in early Thursday Morning according to civilian sources in the area.
The Sri Lankan military has directed retaliatory artillery towards the rebel held areas from Thalladi and adjourning military installations in the Mannar area.
The sudden and intensive bombardment has raised fear among the residents of the Mannar that fighting may break out on the western Front Defense Lines.
Last week the Rebels directed attack towards the northern military heard quarters in the Jaffna peninsula in which at least ten shells had been fired at the Palaali base complex from Rebel-controlled Poonakari. Neither the Rebels nor the Sri Lankan government has commented on the surge of artillery attack in Mannar.
