Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Mass Media and Information Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be asked to take up the issue of alleged links between Eritrea and the LTTE.
Addressing a press briefing in Colombo Mr. Yapa said that he will request the foreign Minister to look into the revelations made in the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee report about such a connection.
The Asian Tribune website quoting from the US report stated that the Government of Eritrea is providing direct military assistance to LTTE. Minister said that they believe that no sovereign government will assist a recognized terrorist organization.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by Senator Richard G. Lugar now a ranking member of the same committee, reports on the Asian Region in which Sri Lanka is mentioned –
"In Sri Lanka, there are no direct threats to American interests, terrorist or otherwise. An escalating conflict, however, between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is now on the verge of outright civil war. Continual uncertainty and eruptions of violence are indirectly affecting Americans in the country, but Americans, as of this date, are not direct targets. As Sri Lanka is an island nation, anti-government insurgents primarily receive smuggled military arms and hardware via boat, from Indonesia, among other countries. The government of Eritrea reportedly provides direct assistance to the LTTE."
