A Tamil trader was shot dead by unidentified men at about 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday inside his shop at Kanthalaai, about 40 km off Trincomalee town along Trincomalee Kandy highway. The victim has been identified as Nadarajah Sukumar, 34, father of two children and a resident of Killinochchi.
Police said armed men entered his shop located along Janatha Mawatte, dragged him out and shot him at point blank range. After being sure that he has died, the attackers left the scene in a white van.
Sukumar contested the Kanthalaai Urban Council election as candidate of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) last year, sources said.
