Sri Lanka: We, journalists, cannot be cowed down by threats - SLWJ President

President of Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association Sarath Balasuriya stated that the journalists in the country cannot be cowed down or silenced by threats of any nature. They will not give up their commitment.

He was addressing the demonstration held opposite the Fort railway station protesting against the threats to senior journalist and Sunday Times consultant editor Iqbal Athas.
The demonstration was organized under the auspicious of Sri Lanka Working Journalist Association, Media Employees’ Trade Union, Sri Lanka Tamil Media Organization, Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum and Independent Media mmovement.
He continued that there are threats on the media men. There are threats on translators but such threats cannot make the media men refrain from exposing the truth.
P.Jayantha, Secretary of the SLWJA, stated that the demonstration was not to seek security for the media men. They were not demonstrating for any guarantee for employment. They were demonstrating to ensure the right to information of the people.
