Several villages lying along the western coastline of Mannar face the threat of Sinhala rule as the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is seen to be making an all-out push to conquer the district. On Friday morning the Sri Lankan military said that it has officially launched a major offensive to capture several villages lying along the mainland in Mannar district.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) reported putting up heavy resistance, killing several enemy combatants. The body of a Sinhala soldier was recovered by LTTE cadres.
Liberation Tigers also reported the death of a front-line trooper during the defence of the Tamil villages.
Ground reports from the affected villages located in the narrow coastal stripe from Sillavaturai to Puvarangakan say that Sri Lankan soldiers appear to be gaining ground.
Meanwhile, on Sasturday a SLA Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) was successful in blowing up a van carrying fleeing villagers from the affected areas..
Eight people, many of them women and children, were killed and six more were seriously injured in the explosion in Musil, Mannar.
