Sri Lankan government will lobby against a statement from the Chair of the Human Rights Council in Geneva next week. The EU moved a resolution against Sri Lanka on the human rights violations, deteriorating security situation and abductions that have taken place over the last year.
The SL government, however, thwarted this move on many occasions through lobbying by the Sri Lankan delegation and now it is learnt that the Council is planning to issue a statement from the Chair.
Informed sources said a statement from the Chair could only be made concurrently with the country concerned what Sri Lanka has vehemently opposed.
Human Rights and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, Attorney General C.R. De Silva, Peace Secretariat Director General Prof. Rajiva Wijesinghe and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the UN in Geneva Dayan Jayatilleke will travel to Geneva on Monday to take part in the Human Rights Council sessions there. They will put forward Sri Lanka’s case and to prevent the Chair from issuing the statement.
