Sri Lanka: 14 civilians including two families seek refuge in the Jaffna HRC office

Two whole families of ten individuals and four others have sought refugee in the office on Monday. The officials of the Human Rights Commission are struggling to provide safety as the Sri Lankan police refuse to allow four civilians into Jaffna prison.
According to reports quoting the Jaffna Human Rights Commission officials, ten civilians belonging to two families from Madduvil Thenmaraadchchi and four others sought refuge at the Jaffna Human Rights Commission office after getting death threats from the Sri Lankan military and its paramilitary operatives. A family of five including a three year old baby from Madduvil North, another family of five including a one year old child from Madduvil south has surrendered themselves to the Jaffna Human Rights Commission Office on Monday.
Meanwhile, four individuals, three from Thenmaraadchchi and one from Valikamam have also sought refuge in the Jaffna Human Rights Commission Office. They include, Mahendram age 33 and Iyatralai, Suthakaran age 22 both from Iyatralai, Susivathanan age 29 from Madduvil Sivan Koviladi and Kowsikaran age 28 from Illanthaikulam Ariyaalai. According to reports, the officials of the Human Rights Commission have tried to place the 14 civilians in the protective custody of the Jaffna prison through the Sri Lankan police, but the police has refused to take all the 14 civilians into the prison and only allowed 10. The human rights commission officials are facing to provide safety for the remaining four.
Over sixty civilians have sought refuge in the Jaffna Human Rights Commission Office so far and this is the first time for large number of people to surrender in the office in one day. The number of people seeking refuge in the Jaffna human rights commission in Jaffna has increased during the past weeks. The trend is indicative of the unbearable level of intimidation and death threats in the peninsula, said an observer. The people of Jaffna are requesting the international human rights organizations to intervene immediately to stop the increasing atrocities of the Sri Lankan forces and paramilitaries.
