Around 60 civilians, both male and female, of different ages have appealed to Jaffna Human Rights Commission seeking its protection after they received death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and government military backed paramilitaries, in July and August, HRC sources said.
Sources in HRC said the Jaffna prison is now overcrowded as more people are coming to them everyday. Under this circumstance, the authorities concerned are contemplating alternative arrangements so that more people can be given protection.
It is learnt that a total of 61 civilians, 48 through Jaffna Court, 10 through Point Pedro Court and one each through Chaavakachcheari, Kayts and Mallaakam courts have been sheltered in protective custody in Jaffna prison in last two months.
On Monday alone 14 civilians surrendered to HRC Jaffna offices after being threatened by the SLA.
People in the peninsula are getting more and more afraid of being victims of SLA repression in the days to come.
During the last 2 weeks in August, five civilians were shot dead in Jaffna peninsula, 22 have been abducted while 11 have sought protection with Jaffna HRC after receiving death threats from the SLA, according to different sources.
