According to reports the human rights violations and the settlement of Sinhala people in the traditional Tamil and Muslim villages in the occupied eastern region will be debated in the Sri Lankan parliament on Wednesday. The numerous extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances, settlements of Sinhalese and the political issue of the de merger of the Northeast would be the focal point of the whole debate.
The TNA, in its motion mentioned, that the human rights violations against the Tamil community are done with total impunity and without end in the Northeast. The TNA also charged that the Sri Lankan government is trying to destroy the peace process through covert and overt actions.
The de merger of the North east was an example of the government’s attitude, the party added. By settling Sinhala people in the traditional Tamil area the Sri Lankan government is trying to change the demography of the region, the party accused. It further said that such moves were a blatant racial discrimination against the Tamil and Muslim communities.
