sn_tna_logothumb_818sampanthar1The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said in parliament yesterday what had happened in the East could be described as ‘doom of the East’ though the government calls it the ‘dawn of the East’. TNA Leader R. Sampanthan, who opened the debate on the North-East situation, said that although President Mahinda Rajapaksa had thanked the security forces on February 3 for liberating Vakarai without causing any casualties, over 300 civilians had been killed in the military operations in the East so far. Sampanthan said the President had been misinformed about the real situation.

Besides, he said houses, crops, livestock and agricultural equipment belonging to Tamil people had been destroyed in military operations, and they are now living in a state of penury. “What has happened in the East, what is happening and what is going to happen in the future is the doom of the east,” he said. Sampanthan said that the government should take effective steps to terminate the continuing flagrant HR violations.

He also said that the government should take appropriate action to re-merge the two provinces while desisting from taking steps to alienate state land to the majority community in the two provinces so as to change the demographic composition in the East. He also requested the authorities concerned to resettle the displaced Tamils on lands from which they were evicted in consultation with them.

Speaking next EPDP Leader and Minister Douglas Devananda said that Tamils had to grapple with immense difficulties because of the war-monger LTTE leader’s atrocities. He said the Tiger leadership is now bracing for a destructive offensive against government forces.
