Sri Lanka: Two mothers and six children placed in the protection of a Church home in Jaffna

On Monday due to death threats form the Sri Lankan military and paramilitary operatives. The Jaffna Magistrate has ordered the Sri Lankan police on Tuesday to place the asylum seekers to place them in the charity home attached to the Irupalai church as they cannot be placed in the protective custody of the Jaffna prison.
The two women along with their husbands and children sought refuge at the Jaffna Human Rights Commission office after getting death threats from the Sri Lankan military and paramilitary operatives. 14 civilians including two mothers and their six children sought safe refuge at the HRC Jaffna office on Monday. This was the highest number in one day to seek refuge in the office.
Reports say that the magistrate in his directive to the SLA and Police High Commands stressed that the two mothers and their children should be provided full protection. Meanwhile, according to the human rights commission officials around sixty civilians including youths, young women and family men have sought protection with their office due to death threats from Sri Lanka Army their paramilitaries, in July and August. The officials said, as the Jaffna prison is over crowded, they are looking for alternatives to the Jaffna prison as safe places for the asylum seekers as more persons requesting protection.
