Stating that the national capacity in Sri Lanka to investigate the human rights violations is insufficient the organization called for more international investigations and independent monitors. The Amnesty report comes as the United Nations Human Rights Council is preparing for its sixth session to be held during 10th to 28th of September.
The agency has called on the members of the human rights council to appeal to the Sri Lankan government to stop the spiraling human rights violation in the country and to work towards increased international effort to curb the worrying trend. The report said that “Unlawful killings, abductions and enforced disappearances of civilians are daily occurrences in Sri Lanka” and urged the council members take action to address the rapidly deteriorating situation in the country during their sixth session.
The agency expressed its concern over the Sri Lankan government’s failure to protect civilians particularly in the Northeast where unlawful killings and enforced disappearances are on the increase. On the issue of paramilitaries the Amnesty accused the Sri Lankan government operated Karuna paramilitary group in the east of recruiting child soldiers, extortion and intimidation in the Sri Lankan government controlled areas.
Citing the recent killings of journalists and media men in Jaffna with the tacit support of the military the report expressed its “fear” of a “return to a pattern of the security forces involvement in extrajudicial killing of journalists and others”The report also expressed concern that the Emergency regulations in Sir Lanka work as a catalyst to human rights violations and discrimination against Tamil community.
Finally the report called for increased international effort to curb the increasing rights violations in Sri Lankan. In an eight point request the agency has urged the UN Human rights councilors to prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to stop the violations and to work for more international efforts.
