EU sources say that by relieving the government of its financial commitments to civil duties the economic burden of the war against the Tamils can be greatly reduced.

Recently, there has been an upsurge in the cost of living for the Sinhala majority who are pumping in more than 15% of government income into their war against Tamils.

"The European Union, which is one of four main sponsors of the war in Sri Lanka, is determined to ensure that the Sinhalese do not give up on the war effort simply because of the economic costs," analyst DJ Jayraj says.

"Soon other sponsors of the war in Sri Lanka, namely the United States and Japan would also be pouring in millions more to sustain the country's infrastructure as the Sri Lankan government continues to divert more and more funds towards its planned offensive in Vanni," DJ Jayraj added.
