thumb_tharisanam_tvthumb_mpspeecjMr Garath Thomas said that ''British Government is extremely concerned about the Human Rights abuses now taking place in Sri Lanka. They have been well documented by groups such as Amnesty International and People like Louise Arbour United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and variety of other organisations, as a result of those concerns of Human Rights violations we took the decision to withhold temporarily some of our aid to send our signal of concern to the Sri Lankan government.

But we have continuously talked to the Sri Lankan government. I had a meeting with John Hutton the Secretary of State of Trade and Sri Lanka’s Trade Minister G L Peries and raised Britain's concern about the increase of Human Rights abuses in Sri Lanka. Mr Peries made it clear that Sri Lanka wants peace, He said that the Sri Lankan government recognised that a political strategy to engage all the different communities is required to bring peace. He acknowledged our concerns about the Human Rights violation in Sri Lanka and we are waiting to see the improvement in the Human Rights situation in Sri Lanka.

I made it clear that we hope that the Sri Lankan government will allow Louise Arbour, United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, to expand her work monitoring Human Rights violation and working with everybody in Sri Lanka to reduce the HR violation. Disappearanses We have made it clear that in future any Human Rights violation, any Disappearances, and arrest without personal access to a lawyer and access to medical support is not acceptable. I think that Louise Arbour from United Nations, Amnesty International and other Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) are doing very important work monitoring the abuses going on and highlighting to the government and to the international community where these are taking place and identifying the measures what the Government needs to take to rebuild confidence across the island.

Some abuses are obviously are directly connected to members working with the Sri Lankan government and other players of the conflict. We believe that the Sri Lankan government must take a leading role and do more. Future support The Tsunami relieve works are not complete, So we will have to continue to support the needy but we will not provide the help in the same way we have done in the past. We insisted that we were concerned about the Human Rights abuse in Sri Lanka. Military action in North We raised this issue and Mr Peries agreed military solution is very unlikely to be successful, we have to see a familiar process as per northern Ireland. He made clear that a political solution is necessary. We need it sooner than later.

The GOSL will make these soothing noises eat and drink to their fill, and go back and do what they have for the last 50 years. Genocide. The question is what is the UK going to do when they are deceived again?
