A member of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) intelligence wing was shot dead by unidentified men in Thaddaatheru area in Point Pedro on Saturday afternoon, sources from Point Pedro said. Meanwhile, one soldier of Special Task Force (STF) was killed and five others were injured in a bomb explosion incident in Narakamulla area in Thoppigala on Saturday morning.
The incident in Thaddaatheru area in Point Pedro took place at 4.50 p.m. and Liberation Tigers have been held responsible for the killing.
The victim was travelling on the main road in Thaddaatheru when he was shot. The body was taken to Palaly military camp, according to sources.
SLA soldiers conducted a cordon and search operation in the adjoining areas of Thaddaatheru until late hours Saturday night, and detained a good number of civilians. Neither details of those arrested have been made public nor they were released till midnight.
Meanwhile, one soldier of Special Task Force (STF) was killed and five others were injured in a bomb explosion incident in Narakamulla area in Thoppigala on Saturday morning, sources in Batticaloa said.
According to sources, the bomb kept hidden inside a van exploded at about 11.15 a.m. when Sri Lankan Army soldiers were checking the van.
The body of the trooper was sent to Ampaarai district hospital for postmortem examinations. The injured soldiers have also been air-lifted by helicopters to same hospital.
After the incident, SLA launched an extensive search operation in the area and claimed they have recovered large amounts of ammunitions and explosives during search.
