Incident of burglary in five Tamil houses inside a high security area heavily guarded by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sentries took place during curfew hours at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, civil society sources in Vadamaraadchi said.
The houses are located on the road joining Nelliyadi Junction and Vathiri Junction—surrounded by SLA sentries, 3 km from Point Pedro in Vadamaraadchi.
Local people have accused SLA soldiers and its Intelligence Wing personnel of committing this crime in which, they said, cash and valuables worth more than Rs. 5 million were stolen.
Two house owners were also injured during the burglary, they added. They have been admitted to the Manthikai Government Hospital.
When the burglary was going on, local people informed Nelliyadi Police and the SLA camp of the matter but neither police nor army personnel responded to the call.
Later, they contacted Point Pedro judge Ariyanayagam who immediately brought the matter to the notice of Jaffna Military head quarters.
Then SLA officials directed security personnel to go to the spot but before their arrival burglars disappeared with the money and valuables they looted.
Earlier, Jaffna district residents raised allegation relating to involvement of SLA soldiers in many burglary incidents in the peninsula.
Jaffna District Court Judge, Me Vignarajah, in a ruling three months earlier said SLA officials would remain liable for the burglaries that would occur during curfew hours.
