The charge was made by the JVP parliamentarian Sunil Handunneththi in the Sri Lankan parliament on Friday. He said that Sri Lankan state had a mere Rs. 529 million debt in 1950 and the per capita debt was Rs. 73 in those days. But now, he said, the state debt is a staggering 2,771 Billion rupees and every citizen of the country is burdened with Rs. 12, 000 as a result. Mr. Handunneththi has asked the parliament, what development achieved through these debts if roads are dilapidated, no teachers in schools and malnutrition spread.
