Security arrangements here have been stepped up in view of the arrival of Pazha Nedumaran, the leader of the Tamil Nationalist Movement and his supporters here on Tuesday.
The group proposed to undertake a boat journey to Sri Lanka, in violation of rules, from Nagapattinam port on Wednesday, carrying relief material for the Lankan Tamils.
Armed police personnel have been deployed in the coastal areas such as Kodiakarai, Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam.
Nedumaran and his supporters were likely to be arrested prior to their boat journey attempt. However, police officials remained tight-lipped about the strategy to handle the situation.
Nedumaran was staying in a marriage hall at Nagapattinam along with his supporters. He was scheduled to address a public meeting at Avuri Thidal along with Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan.
While addressing public meetings, organised by the Coordination Committee of the Supporters of Freedom for Tamil Eelam at Kuthalam and Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district on Monday, Nedumaran charged that the Lankan Government was planning to annihilate Tamils by making them struggle for food and medicine.
He called upon the Tamils to unite for the cause of their suffering brethren and join the boat journey in large numbers.
Stating that his boat journey proposal was not a publicity stunt, Nedumaran said that he was determined to send the medicine and food materials to Lanka even if his present attempts were foiled by the government.
Nedumaran attacked both the Central and State Governments for not coming forward to extend humanitarian assistance to the Tamils in Lanka.
