The unwilligness of the Central Government to provide material assistance to the Sri Lankan Tamils is reflective of its anti-Tamil attitude, said Tamizhar Desiya Iyakkam leader Pazha Nedumaran.
Addressing a meeting organised here on Tuesday, Nedumaran pointed out that nearly five lakh Tamils have fallen victim to hunger due to the atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan Army. The Central and State Governments remained mute spectators since permission was denied to transport relief materials worth Rs 1 crore, which were collected from the public. At the same time, the Centre was offering military aid to the Sri Lankan Government.
The relief materials cannot be permitted to rot and hence this journey was undertaken, he added. Tamil Desiya Poduvudaimai Katchi general secretary P Maniarasan, Rama Sivasankaran Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Tamil Desiya Viduthalai Iyakkam general secretary Thiagu and Tamil Kazhaga organising committee member Tamil Mukilan were also present.
Meanwhile, members of the boat journey agitation group arrived here carrying relief material, collected by the Iyakkam and other Tamil outfits, for the people of Jaffna. They were extended a welcome on behalf of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Tamizhar Panpattu Avai and the Thanmana Pattaligal Avai near the bus stand.
