Sri Lankan Army (SLA) forcibly sent 74 families from Verukal, Eeechilampattu District, to a jungle area in Chinnakkulam, Udappukkeani, on September 6. The families apprised Tamil National Alliance Parliamentariam, Thurairatnsaingham, of their plight, saying that SLA soldiers got them into buses forcibly and sent them to the jungle area in Chinnakkulam, Udappukkeani, 3 km from Eeechilampattu.
Talking to media Mr. Thurairatnsaingham said that the displaced people have told him that the SLA has taken over buildings and the hospital in Eeechilampattu District Council, and have constructed a large military base demolishing all the houses in the locality.
The refugees, who were previously housed in Batticaloa transitional shelters, complained to him that they are suffering from lack of basic facilities in the area and shortages of relief supplies and people are being compelled to live under the trees.
The refugees were left in undeveloped jungle areas despite pleas to the SLA to permit resettlement in Eeechilampattu, the affected families complained.
