ICJ statement issued from Geneva reiterated it position regarding the Sri Lankan government’s investigations into the massacre of 17 aid workers in Muthoor last year and called for the immediate identification and prosecution of those responsible for the crime. The release also demanded that the Sri Lankan government should immediately establish the Independent Task Force within the judicial system in Sri Lanka to ‘reinvigorate the investigation’ as it promised. The ICJ was particular about the issue of the controversial 5.56 bullet bullets found from the dead aid workers body.
The ICJ expressed serious concerns over the police meddling of the evidence and called for the Australian ballistic expert’s inclusion into the investigations.
"To date, no independent ballistics expert has reviewed the original ballistics material" the release stated.
The release said that the ICJ has met with the Sri Lankan delegation on their request in Geneva. This contradicts the Sri Lankan delegation’s earlier statement that they would not meet the ICJ until the issue an apology for their earlier statements on Sri Lanka.According to reports the Sri Lankan Human Rights minister Mahinda Samarasinge and Attorney General C.R. De Silva headed the Sri Lankan delegation to the meeting.
