Sri Lanka parliament was in heat today as the newly sworn MP Basil Rajapaksa was engaged in a heated argument with Sri Lanka Freedom Party People’s Wing leader Mangala Samaraweera over an alleged deal with the Tamil Tigers.
The MPs debated a proposal put forward by SLFP-PW MP Sripathi Suriyaarachchi to appoint a parliamentary select committee to probe the allegations leveled at the President and the government that they had a secret pact with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and offered them money to stop the Tamils from voting for the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
The Chairman of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva proposed an amendment to the proposal that the dealings of the respective governments with LTTE since 1989 should be included in the probe.
The Opposition United National Party (UNP) and the Marxist People’s Liberation Front (JVP) opposed the amendment stating that it would tarnish the aim of the proposal.
The Speaker stated that the amendment would be accepted in a way that it would not hamper the main objective of the proposal.
The proposal was passed in the parliament with amendments.
