BASL urges immediate action on threat
A special meeting of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) moved a resolution strongly urging President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the government to take immediate action against last week’s alleged threat to the Additional Magistrate of Mt. Lavinia by a gang of thugs who demanded that Government Ministers Son a suspect on remand be released on bail.
“The Bar was shocked to hear of the alleged intimidation of the Additional Magistrate, Ms. Dharshika Wimalasiri” the statement said.
Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva said yesterday that the alleged threat to Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate Dharshika Wimalasiri by a gang demanding bail for Minister Mervyn Silva's son was an insult to the judiciary and a serious crime. The Chief Justice said that the Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate had informed him of the incident and a special investigation was underway. He said that action would be taken against the culprits irrespective of their position once they were identified.
